Marie Lawson and partner Adam Watson run The Shearer’s Cook cafe in Silverton near Broken Hill and are benefiting from the tourism drawn to the area by events and festivals like the Mundy Mundy Bash. We’re greeted by deputy principal and year 5 and 6 teacher Belinda Elliot, who has only been with the school since the beginning of the year, but is clearly making her mark with these clearly hardworking and engaged students who are fortuitously studying the process of writing newspaper reports, which gives me an excuse to draw caricatures on the whiteboard. Meticulously-painted weatherboard buildings raised high off the ground in the manner of traditional Queenslander architecture. The small school out here presents as something of an outback showpiece, with several of its Tropical palm trees, no doubt planted to make the New South Wales folk across the border envious of the balmy Queensland lifestyle.īut our first objective of the day is still 95km further on: to visit the two-teacher school at the junction at Moonie on the Leichhardt Highway.
